The idea behind the Compass desk was to create a functional yet unusual-looking working desk for Samygin's own design studio. Inspired by the perfect form of a technical instrument, this desk offers a comfortable workspace for one or two people.
One of the standout features of the Compass desk is its ability to transform part of the top into a drawing board with a fixed 20-degree angle. This simple mechanism allows architects and designers to draw on a sloped surface, enhancing their creative process. The desk's shape also adds to its uniqueness, with support legs that resemble two pairs of compasses, staying true to the inspiration behind the design.
The Compass desk is made from solid oak, polished with transparent oil to showcase its natural beauty. The decorative brass details and cedar wood inside the drawers add a touch of elegance and sophistication. With dimensions of W 1635mm x D 1200mm x H 1045mm (h 760mm), the desk provides ample space for work and storage.
The top of the Compass desk features five sliding drawers and an angled drawing board, made of two parts hinged together. This design allows for easy folding, movement, and transportation of the desk, making it versatile for different work environments.
The design process for the Compass desk took almost two months, from the initial sketch and design work to producing detailed and executive drawings. The wooden and metal parts were then meticulously crafted over a period of three months. The desk was developed in Moscow in 2011, showcasing the designer's commitment to creating a unique and functional workspace.
The Compass desk has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Compass desk, with its strong technical characteristics and remarkable level of excellence, has left a lasting impression on the design community.
With its combination of functionality, creativity, and unique design, the Compass desk is a testament to Alexey Samygin's talent and vision. It offers architects and designers a workspace that not only meets their practical needs but also inspires their creative process.
